Natural Graphite

What is Natural Graphite

Natural graphite is a metallic mineral that occurs as one of the most stable states of carbon under ordinary conditions. It has a crystalline form that occurs in a hexagonal structure.

This stable form of carbon has a multitude of superior features that make it highly sought after in various industries. It also displays properties that are found both in non-metal and metals.

Types of Natural Graphite

There are three distinct variations of naturally occurring graphite. These graphite variations include;

Flake Graphite

This is a variation of graphite whose main distinctive feature is its flaky structure. This type of graphite is created when uncontaminated carbon atoms fuse to generate crystalline graphite that is presented as distinguishable flakes. Flaky graphite has many advantageous properties both physical and chemical including high thermal conductivity and melting point making it suitable for different applications. They are the most recurrent form of natural graphite found in marble and gneiss.

Vein Graphite

This variation of graphite is typically harvested from fissures and veins of high-quality metamorphic rocks like gneiss and schist. This variation has a purity of up to ninety-nine point five percent graphite. It has a superior crystalline structure that has increased electrical and thermal conductivity. Vein graphite is not as common as flake graphite and its minimal availability makes it more valuable. This is only mined from Sri Lanka

Amorphous Graphite

This is the most commonly mined variation but has the least qualities in terms of its carbon purity. It is formed through a physical metamorphosis of tectonic stress and anthracite coal seam. It is created It occurs on deposits of mesomorphic rocks including shale, coal, and slate. Although it still retains its crystalline form it has an anhedral arrangement which is why it is referred to as amorphous. This type of graphite is quite stable with conductive and lubricating properties.

Where to Obtain Natural Graphite

Graphite naturally occurs in metamorphic rocks. These rocks include gneiss, schist, and marble among others. It is harvested using underground mining and open-pit methods.

If you are looking for natural graphite, East Carbon will help you find the best grade.

Advantages of Natural Graphite

Natural graphite has various advantages most of which stem from its purity and its crystalline structure. These benefits include;

  • Natural graphite has superior thermal conductivity for systems that require heat management.
  • It can be utilized for manufacturing electrical components because of its crystalline structure which makes it highly conductive to electricity.
  • Graphite is a highly durable element which is advantageous as the products manufactured from it equally last for long.
  • One of graphite’s main beneficial properties is its resistance to high temperatures making the element highly suitable for applications.
  • Naturally occurring graphite is typically less expensive in comparison to graphite that is artificially synthesized.
  • Graphite that is mined consumes a lot less energy than the energy required to synthesize graphite.
  • Natural graphite has a high energy density making it ideal for energy conservation appliances and applications.
  • It can also be easily utilized alongside other materials which makes it easy to manufacture different products.
Synthetic Graphite vs Natural Graphite

The main difference between naturally occurring graphite and synthetic graphite is the means through which they are produced.

Natural graphite is mined and harvested from metamorphic rocks where it forms as a result of high pressure and temperature

Synthetic graphite is created artificially using intensive procedures that consume a lot of energy. East Carbon synthetic graphite requires multistep processing which involves decomposing carbides that are thermally unstable and deposition of chemical vapor among others.

Applications of Natural Graphite

Graphite has several applications in a wide range of fields. It can be utilized in its natural form or further processed to create different forms of graphite such as graphene. The application of graphite can be categorized according to the type of graphite.

Flaky Graphite Uses

Flaky graphite can be used for; heat-intensive applications, thermal conduction, fuel cells, the foundry industry for lubrication, batteries, powder metallurgy, protective coatings, rubber compounds, friction moderation, and electronics.

Where to use Vein Graphite

Vein graphite can be used in the plastics industry, battery cells, refractory materials, carbon brushes, lubricants, and powder metallurgy.

Using Amphorous Graphite

Amphorous graphite as brake linings, plastics industry, clutch materials, gaskets, coatings, refractory materials, lubricants, and powder metallurgy.
