What is Carbon Felt
Carbon felt is a fabric designed with polyacrylonitrile fiber which is pre-oxidized. The felt is produced by several procedures including matting of the fibers together. This fabric has many superior features that make it suitable for a variety of applications.
Types of Carbon Felt
Carbon felt is categorized into two main groups. These categories include;

This type is lightweight. It is however surpasses in terms of structural flexibility and thermal. The properties make it a great choice for batteries and furnaces.

Its design features heavy-duty characteristics. They have a lower thermal conductivity but increased stability. Their reaction when exposed to high temperatures they have a better resistance. They are also resistant to thermal shock.
Advantages of Carbon Felt
There are several benefits of utilizing carbon Felt. These benefits include;
- It is fireproof and features superior fire-retardant capabilities
- Stable electrochemical performance.
- charging and discharging density can be increased to more than two times
- Carbon felt has very limited fume emissions
- They are fairly simple to install and cut.
- Carbon felts have a reduced density and limited thermal mass.
- It has an incredibly high thermal resistance of up to eight hundred degrees Celsius.
- These felt have reduced sulfur and ash components.

Production of carbon felt
Production of the carbon felt involves three main steps that can be summarized as first stabilization, then carbonization, and lastly graphitization
- The polyacrylonitrile fiber is first pulled and oxidized all at once while being exposed to increased temperatures ranging between 200–300 °C which changes the materials composition from thermoplastic to a ladder compound.
- The resulting fibers are carbonized using nitrogen at a thousand degrees Celsius.
- It is further subjected to increased heating at a range of 1500–3000 °C to orient crystalized until purity or at least 92 percent of carbon fibers expelling all other compounds including nitrogen.
Application of Carbon Felt
Owing to its versatile nature and many desirable qualities carbon felt has a multitude of applications. These applications include;
- Welding blankets and screens
- Blast furnaces
- Thermal insulation
- Equipment protection
- Hydraulic line protection
- Pipe lagging
- Flange protection
- Kilns
